Palmer Mill Road-Devils Rest-She-Devil-Vacuum Cleaner Loop 11-14-23

Post by bobcat » November 15th, 2023, 8:08 pm

I set out with the intent of doing the She-Devil Trail in a loop that took in Devils Rest. Parking where Brower Road meets the gated Palmer Mill Road, I first took in the views of Bridal Veil Creek from the nearby road bridge. Hiking up on Palmer Mill Road, I immediately passed the cutoff coming down from the Vacuum Cleaner Trail. This stretch of Palmer Mill Road had been mowed recently, but higher up the surface narrowed and the mowing activity ceased.

I passed a gate on the right that guarded an overgrown tie road, now a running creek, which goes down to the bottom of the canyon and then up to the site of Palmer Mill, a cluster of buildings which was razed in the 1940s when the operation came to a halt. This area belongs to a logging company, but there has been no recent logging on this side of the creek. A new trail sign denoted the convergence of the She-Devil Trail with Palmer Mill Road, but I kept on. Soon, I came to the barrier at the washout on Palmer Mill Road.

Before me was Bridal Veil Creek, braiding in numerous channels where it had washed out the road a number of years ago. A Forest Service renaturalization project took out the culverts on the road, removed the gravel, and strewed about logs to create a wetland. Sedges and rushes now abound where the road once tracked, and the creek, once constrained by engineers, has expanded its explorations. This also made it the most difficult part of the hike, with numerous crossings of Bridal Veil channels on slippery logs. There is a trail of sorts, keeping first to the left side but then constantly crossing and recrossing the creek. Eventually I mounted a massive berm of repurposed gravel to hike the remainder of the road unimpeded and reach the boulder barrier at the junction with Multnomah Basin Road.

I took this road down to the tie trail, then hit the Devils Rest Trail, and went on up to the pile of mossy boulders, which are still, like many of my neighbors in Portland, celebrating Hallowe’en.

Below Devils Rest, I headed left on the Red Shorts Cut, first noting a sign that has replaced the Red Shorts and perhaps a signal of some kind of feud? The alluring she-devil at the junction with Devils Fork still poses coyly. Then I passed a sign for “Smith Road”, but was unsure if this led to the She-Devil Trail, so I kept going down Red Shorts, passing an ancient chassis decorating the forest floor. At some point, I decided that “Smith Road” was, in fact, verily the She-Devil, and returned to plunge down that trail.

This took me down into some lovely woods and eventually to the abandoned Smith Road, where a sign confirmed my judgement. Following Smith Road on the She-Devil, I noted a mileage sign for Devils Rest at a trail that angled off to the right.

I thought, “What the heck. It’s in the right direction,” and took it. There was more lovely forest, and then evidence accrued to ensure me that this was the infamous Vacuum Cleaner Trail, with the old vacuum remains neatly placed by the trail. Then onward through luxurious, quiet woods past another vacuum cleaner and all sorts of “artifacts”, i.e. scofflaw trash. After crossing a little creek, there was another sign, of familiar artistry (you’ll find other such art works on Archer Mountain, for example), that I couldn’t ignore.

So . . . along the Bullet Car Trail, under mossy maple bowers and over Ariel’s Footbridge. I couldn’t fathom why a mermaid would need a footbridge (since I'm pretty certain they don't have feet), but I deduced that perhaps some of them come up this creek to spawn. The bullet car, a 1941 Chrysler, is disappearing into the moss and native blackberry. You can tell it’s been there a while because a whole alder tree grew through it.

Back to the Vacuum Cleaner Trail, which descends a wide ridge crest, mostly on old road beds. When the track turns down towards Palmer Mill Road, I branched off on a narrow, steep old logging road to rejoin Palmer Mill only about 100 yards from my car.

CAUTION: All of this is on trail, but less than a mile of it is on official trails. Wander at your own risk. It is easy to get disoriented in this area.

Red Shorts very much appreciates your trip report with much valuable information and great pictures. He has initiated putting Vacuum Cleaner trail on OSM (Open Street Maps) so folks with GPS exploring these trails have another resource in the field. Of note is that AllTrails adopts OSM changes very quickly. On GAIA, one must switch map to Outdoors ( Thunderforest). Caltopo has updated recently to show entire She Devil and portions of Vacuum Cleaner (not labeled as such as of 11-17-2023) .
Red Shorts continues to focus on Primrose Path reroutes to create a more sustainable, more scenic, and much safer trail. Please don't remove flagging in this area, as most is temporary. Primrose Path remains open for use during the rerouting. If in doubt, follow the obvious trail vs flagging. Please respect switchbacks.
Explore any off trail flagging with great caution, there are deep dens on proposed upper trail reroutes amid the dense salmonberry thickets, you don't want to break through on top of a sleeping bear! Increased small insect activity is seen near bear dens in good weather. Thanks again for everyone's support!
Well Jim, where to next?

Nice job on the TR and great photos documenting the area. I've hiked there since the 70's and it's really turned into a fine place for adventure and exploration.

BTW, the Bullet Car is a '41 Chrysler.

Another possible moniker for the Vacuum Cleaner Trail might be Bridal Veil Plateau Trail, but I'll leave the official naming to the more frequent denizens of the area. Just let me know!

Thanks for the Bullet Car ID, Don. I've corrected it.

All the trails I hiked were in amazing condition, so kudos for all the work that's been put into them.

Smith Road plat
Thanks Peabody. What a great find! What's called Smith Road on the map we now know as Brower Road so I'm confused.

That used to be known as the Oil Pan Trail (or oil pan junction) since someone moved the vacuum cleaner remains. This is fun.

Wow. Glad to see Bobcat was in the area. We’ve been exploring the area weekly. The Vacuum Cleaner Trail popped up on OSM recently and is easy to follow despite not having its own official trail markers. Never found the motorcycle graveyard north of the bullet car. Really great observation about the similarities with the Archer Mtn signage. Are these all homages to the Basil Clark sign style? Met a fellow today and a few weeks back that has been weed whacking the start of Palmer Mill road. He says he’s been maintaining it for 20 years. We talked about Donahue Creek and the nearby Donahue Creek Trail.

The motorcycle graveyard is on a now by-passed segment of Smith Road. It's a very short distance SW of the Oil Pan Trail/Vacuum Cleaner Trail.

Made by the same guy. Yes, homages to and in honor of Basil Clark.

That would be the mysterious Dave. He's done some amazing work keeping Palmer Mill Rd. brushed and all of the trails on the west end of the area. I think he's also the builder of the final 2/3 of the Bullet Car Trail, but I haven't run into him for a while and forgot to ask him last time I saw him.

What intrigues me about the map is the "Palmer Mill" location at the junction of the current Brower Road and Palmer Mill Road. Was this the original mill? It would have to be squidged down and probably built over the creek, nothing like the vast sawmill/log complex up top.

The surveyor calls the existing road "Mr. Smith's Road" and the petition is for a new road from posts 1 - 29. I'd suspect the whole thing was changed to Brower Road after the construction.
