Alway Family Trail - Cold Spring Camp - Big Huckleberry Mountain

Post by pmcjunkin » June 11th, 2023, 5:43 pm

Wanted a different way to Big Huckleberry Mountain than via Grassy Knoll Trail 146 (long story), and came across Bobcat's directions on here to the Alway Family Trail off of Forest Road 68.

The trail gives quick access to Cold Spring Camp, with Gaia measuring .9 mi. The Alway Trail's tread is mostly discernible, but in some places is filling in with ground cover and lots of limbs, needles, cones, etc.; tried flinging out as many limbs as I could but there are lots left. A handful of blowdowns were easily stepped over, and frequent diamond-shaped markers were helpful in some of the less-defined areas.

Cold Spring was flowing nicely, and Grassy Knoll Trail on to the PCT and then to the top of Big Huckleberry were clear with a few trilliums and Oregon anemone.

Views over the Gorge, to Mt. Hood, and beyond were great, as usual.
