Mishe Mokwa

Post by drm » March 11th, 2023, 2:37 pm

The Mishe Mokwa trail has become a classic loop in the Santa Monica Mountains National Park in southern California. I first hiked the roughly 6 mile loop probably 40 years ago growing up in the area and it was unknown then. It is definitely not unknown now. It passes by the highest peak of the SM Mtns, Sandstone Peak, at 3111 feet and is in a remote area at the western edge of the range. The name apparently has it's roots in the Chumash people who may have created parts of it long ago.

What a cool change of scenery! Thanks for posting the photos. I have family in that area, including my mother-in-law who is something of an amateur Chumash historian (and local historian, more generally). I'll need to squeeze in a hike in this spot next time I'm down there.

I really appreciate you putting this on my radar. Great post!
