Larch Mountain Crater Loop 8/28/2022

Post by Rsynak » September 1st, 2022, 6:43 am

Mostly lovely duff. Few people. Shady and cool.

The trail is open and in good shape. Though it was a sunny Sunday, I passed only two groups and three individuals on the whole hike. The lookout point off the parking lot was full, but there was hardly anyone actually hiking the trail.

Thank you to the person who helped me find the way. I'm the dolt with the dog who showed up without a map.

Several miles of the trail are runnable.

This is a nice little loop.

Were you anticipating what it would be like to hike on 9/28/2022?

Probably inadvertent. The '9' is right next to the '8' on my keyboard. :D

You can change it… I did that hike in August and enjoyed it!

It's amazing that Larch from the bottom is so busy you need a permit to even approach it, but from the top it's completely empty. Yeah sure, I get that there are some slight differences between the two approaches, but I've also lost count of all the complaints about how they've made the gorge "off limits to locals who just want to hike."

I did a Oneonta - Franklin - Larch loop the other day and encountered zero other people on the trail. None. Same thing parking at the snow gate, heading to Devil's Rest and looping through the Foxglove network. Weekdays, yes, but summer and perfect weather.

Actually, maybe I shouldn't be broadcasting this. Nevermind, nothing to see here.
