Shorthorn to Riley Ck

Post by drm » August 16th, 2022, 3:52 pm

Most destinations on our volcanoes often have fairly short hikes to get there, if the shortest access is what you want. But I often enter on one side then walk part way around to a camp to get a full day's hike out of it. In this case I started on the south side of Mt Adams and walked around to the west side - Round the Mountain Trail to PCT. I camped near Riley Creek, a little ways up from the PCT.

The trail only has a few logs down here and there. There are no bugs on the south side. In between Horseshoe Meadow and Riley Creek they start to show up. Probably at dusk they would be worse at Horseshoe. This route is about 10 miles one way, not much EG. And at first my Thermacell would not light. What a disaster! But in the afternoon it wasn't terrible, and it finally lit in the evening when they were getting really bad. With that experience I think I will bring my old-fashioned mosquito coils as a back up.

I'm curious which Thermacell you use? I have the backpacker model that screws onto a fuel canister, but I've always wondered about the portable model with the fuel cartridge.

I suppose mine is what you call the portable model with the small cartridge. The fuel was feeding - when I clicked the starter button to light it, you could hear the sound of the fuel igniting, but it wouldn't stay lit. I wonder if after all these years, the burner part somehow degrades. This is one of the earlier models. The new ones don't look like it. I never had this problem before.

sometimes a stove will "light" but immediately go out. If there isn't enough fuel.

maybe turn up the fuel flow. Maybe the stove isn't properly connected to the canister. Maybe a canister is bad.

There is no flow control with Thermacall. It is one or it is off. And in my case, the cartridges are clear, so you can actually see the remaining fuel. I was thinking that maybe I had a clogged burner jet or something.
