Paradise Park trail 7-15

Post by Double Tree » July 15th, 2022, 7:56 pm

Just wanted a good workout today. Paradise Park trailhead, past the Zigzag trail junction, almost to the Timberline Trail. Turned around at a snowfield I didn't want to try. Didn't have spikes with me.

Avalanche lilies at peak. Still trillium and rhodies nicely in bloom. Very few mosquitoes.

I hadn't heard that Paradise campground had been decommissioned. That was a surprise. A second gate has been added to the entrance.

I've never heard of Paradise Campground. Where is/was it?

There was a small campground right at the Paradise Park trailhead sign. I think it was a free campground. Picnic tables, fire rings, camping right on the creek there. Honeybucket and a garbage can so the forest pass was required for the trail. FS kept it gated during COVID, but people would bring their things in to camp there anyway. Like other campgrounds.

Old school camping ethics: Leave it better than you found it.
New school camping ethics: Leave no trace.
FS camping ethics: Leave it worse than you found it.

To be fair, the COVID era camping ethic should also be included: Leave trash everywhere. So the FS might not have left it worse than they found it. But those caltrop rocks send a message.

To me it looked like camping (which looked heavy to permanent in 2021) has moved south across the creek, as a result to the decommissioning.

How was the blowdown situation? We were just on the Zigzag Mountain trail last weekend and some spots were a bit messy. Hoping to head to the Paradise Park Trail this coming weekend. Thanks!

A bit more blow down added to what was down last year. Nothing terrible. Only one I had to crawl under. The rest, could climb over, or go around.

Thank you, Double Tree! We went up there yesterday, and it was very helpful to know to expect for blowdown. We went up to the ridge above the Paradise Park loop (flowers were pretty good on the slopes here, but limited in Paradise Park itself) and then on to the loop. There are a couple of small snowfields still on the Paradise Park Loop Trail and Timberline Trail. Only one just after one of the creek crossings on the Paradise Loop Trail had some steep areas, but as you can imagine, everything is melting out fast.
