Ramona Falls 2022/6/8

Post by squidvicious » June 8th, 2022, 1:32 pm

Went to Ramona Falls this morning, thought I'd update on conditions (mostly the crossing).

The road in was pretty terrible, ie as expected. There was a sign at the trailhead noting that a trail crew was at work ahead, but I never saw them. The entire loop was in excellent condition, though, with hardly so much as a twig to step over.

The crossing situation has once again completely rearranged itself. I read some reports online that there were a few options, with the easiest ones a ways upstream, but I dead-ended before coming across anything. Not sure if I just misunderstood, or conditions changed. I saw some other people go upstream and then turn back, so it wasn't just me.

No worries, there is an excellent log practically right in front of you as you come down the bank. I don't do balance stuff, especially since it was sitting on a decent downward angle, so I opted for the sit-n-scoot. It's a big log, no bark or branches, and high off the water, so it's easy to slide across--and you only have to go about half way before you can drop down onto a big rock and rock-hop the last little bit (at least in today's conditions). But on the way back I saw a girl just hop up and walk across like it was nothing, so to each their own.

The falls were especially full and lovely. If you want to say a last farewell to snow without having to risk actually hiking in it, there was one lonely little reserve of snow hiding in a depression at the top by the stock gate.

I had only seen a handful of people up to that point, but was surprised how many I started running into on the way back. Plus how many were camping on the drive in. Seemed like a lot for a Wednesday morning. I think it's going to be a busy summer!

I've done that at that same place

scoot across a log on my seat because I was fearful of balancing

then young women just scampered across as if it was nothing

Thanks for the report. It's getting to be that time of year when I head up Yocum Ridge and see how far I can make it, but with all the late season snow I might push it out another couple of weeks.
You know exactly what to do.
There's no need to be afraid.
Keep walking.

Here are two pics from the crossing taken in late May of this year (2022). I was able to walk back (up) the log, but scooted across going to (down). I would think balancing with a large pack could be sketchy. A fall into the river would flat out suck.

This is the view right when you get to the crossing.

Here's the log/bridge in question.

I hate log crossings and haven't been to Ramona since the seasonal "bridge" washed away. Is it too deep to roll up the ol' pants and cross?

You could pretty easily walk across if you didn't mind getting your feet wet

Of course there are times when the flow is much higher, like after heavy rains/snow melt, when it would be unsafe

For certain, it would be a judgement call. In the summer it can be fine in the morning but then in the afternoon be high.

In September last year water at that crossing was higher at 5:40PM than it was a 4PM. I didn't expect levels to continue to rise into the evening.

I did the hike yesterday and the log at the main trail crossing was probably doable but felt that there was a better option, and there was. About 200 to 250 yards upstream that was a much better (wider and level) log that made the crossing easier. Once on the other side there was a well worn foot path to the trail.

Thanks so much. I looked downstream and saw nothing, but didn't look far enough upstream to see this.
