Trapper Creek

Post by drm » May 21st, 2022, 1:40 pm

Camped just above Terrace Camp last night and hiked up as far as Hidden Creek. No snow to that point and likely quite a ways beyond. The trail is in decent shape and after the first quarter mile there aren't too many trees down. I took my folding saw to make passage easier around those there are. Anybody planning to go very far should be ready for some wet foot creek crossings.

Somebody tried to get into the fee box. How much could there really be?

Somebody cut some trees! Thanks Don.

Hey Don, you missed this one.

This log over a creek is a good log but quit higher above the water than it looks, maybe 6'. Bad news to fall off this one.

Dean,

Thanks for the update! Looks like I need to get back there with the saw.

26 inch diameter is the most I can do. I rarely run into anything that big though. The problem with logs that big is it's hard to move what you've cut unless you have a friend or two along.

Dean: Kel and I went back to Trapper Cr. yesterday and when we arrived, we saw a couple of FS trucks in the lot. The permit receptacle had been re-installed:

We could hear a chain saw in the distance in the direction of the Dry Creek Trail but did not check it out as our goal was a Trapper Cr. loop. Hopefully, that trail is cleared and I think I'll check it out in the next few days.

We hiked our loop route and when we returned the FS trucks were gone and just one tree had been removed on the start of the Trapper Creek Trail. I hiked back to the edge of the wilderness area and took out all the rest of the logs save one. Even that mess in your third photo. I made one cut in the log I didn't finish and that took the tension off of it but at about 30 inches dimeter, it's a bit above my pay grade. Here's that log in a photo from last December. Easy enough to get over as Kel is demonstrating.

There's one more I left on purpose since at least Kel can walk under it without having to duck:

BTW, it seems the water in the creek has come down a little and Kel crossed it without getting her feet wet:

After the creek crossing, we checked out the bridge a short distance downstream to see how it's fared over the past winter. This is the trail that leads to the Iron Mike TH:
It's an extremely sturdy bridge so except for the railing, no damage of note:
