Falls Creek Antenna Head

Post by drm » May 8th, 2022, 2:56 pm

So we all know what a lollipop hike is, right? This loop route has two spurs that go to the bottom and top of the waterfall - so an antenna head. And not the best place for a quiet walk in the forest as Falls Creek is thunderous and raging, as it usually is this time of year. Only more so now.

I did the loop CCW, catching the bottom before the top. The road is badly pot-holed but it is only 2.4 miles in. There is one road-wide and deep puddle that some low clearance vehicles might get a wet engine from. And only one car in the lot when I arrived at 9:40 - 18 when I got out at 1:30.

Power Shower? Did I say it was thunderous?

I was out there last week. I think the road was the worst I've seen it. Not because the potholes were so wide or deep--although there were some respectable ones--but because they were absolutely constant. And some did not have a clear line to steer around/through without just dipping in. Usually there are stretches where I can roll along freely for a while, then crawl through a bad stretch, then roll along, etc. Nothing seemed clear. I was wishing I had just parked up early on and walked in, since I was pretty much going walking speed anyway.

The first mile has some clear stretches, but the second mile+ is pretty continuous and you certainly cannot drive around them all. That's why I said at least it is short. Hiking it would be okay if there was a trail, but walking that road in those conditions when it is open seems a lot less fun.

Just focus on the thunderous payoff.
