Kings Mountain Summit from NF Wilson River

Post by ioscode » December 16th, 2021, 8:15 pm

I hiked up Kings Mountain the normal way many years ago, but recently decided to go back and try a different way. For this route, I started at the Diamond Mill OHV area that is right by Lester Creek Falls on the North Fork Wilson River. I followed the Wilson River Trail to the Kings Mountain Jr Trail, Hooked up to the Kings Mountain Trail, went to the summit, and back the same way. It turned out to be really nice.

This is the route, you end up going around 9 miles round trip

I liked how the three different trails you use on the hike are so different.

The section of Wilson River Trail is your typical wide, well maintained easy trail.

It's a nice peaceful stretch.

The Kings Mountain Jr trail is an abrupt change, that sends you up a ridge on a little steep trail.

Then finally on the Kings Mountain Trail, you are on a wide open steep trail that is all rock at times.

And of course, the top is nice too

And a video summary here for the full details,

Cool report - thanks for posting. It's nice to see what the summit view looks like on a clear day. The only time I did Kings it was foggy and dreary. Still made for a really nice hike though :)

Good route and a nice approach from a less visited trailhead!

I've been thwarted by clouds a few times myself!
