Appaloosa Trail

Post by Sugar Pine » September 30th, 2021, 7:44 pm

Checked out the new Appaloosa Trail in the WA DNR Yacolt Burn, which was much more pleasant than I expected. I had low expectations because the area was previously clear-cut and it follows roads in sections. But, much of it was through scenic forest, the trail was in good condition and it took me to the Tarbell and Hidden Falls! (Tarbell by Hidden Falls will be closed for six weeks, link here.)

While looking at Gaia GPS at home, the Appaloosa Trail was showing on the Gaia Topo (feet) map, but it was not on the version I had on my phone, downloaded a while back. No problem, as the trail was well signed. The WA DNR trail map also now includes the Appaloosa Trail.

I did this trail (a loop with the Tarbell and Silver Shadow) a couple of weeks before you. I also enjoyed the upper part of the Appaloosa, nice serene forest all the way to Hidden Falls. Apparently, the Appaloosa had existed sometime in the past but got overrun by clearcuts and logging roads.

Nice to see an actual new trail now and then! Thanks for posting, Sugar Pine!
