Vista Ridge Trailhead to Elk Cove

Post by Rollin » September 28th, 2021, 10:30 am

September 2021 hike from Vista Ridge Trailhead to Elk Cove. Vista Ridge starts on the north west Side of Mt. Hood and connects with the Timberline trail at the tree line. I followed the trail North through Wy' East Basin and up to Elk Cove. I found what looks to be an ice cave in a small glacier next to the Cole Glacier. I also found some Animeta mushrooms(fly agaric).

Pretty cool area that's somewhat close but I hadn't been to. Reminds me of some of the trails by Mt. Adams.

Here's a Youtube video summary:

Interesting factoid: That is, I believe, the lowest perennial snow on Hood.

The lighting and colors in your last pictures is amazing. Good job capturing that.

That's pretty cool. It makes sense too since it's the north side and doesn't get as much sun. It would certainly be easy to get to it and check it out. I would have, if I had started the hike before 1 pm.

I wonder if it's going to be snowed in now after these storms?

They've been heavily processed (HDR).

It was an iPhone picture. Just using whatever its defaults are. If you watch the video that's just a series of pictures too but off an action camera.
