West Crater in GPNF
West Crater in GPNF
I hiked West Crater on Saturday. Some crew has been up there to brush and log the trail recently. But not just the trail, the access road was brushed as well for probably two miles past the trailhead. The hike itself was pleasant. Once you approach the rim of the crater there are fissures in the ground, parallel to each other every 20 feet. I wanted to see lava rock, and I got my wish. It was different to see this kind of rock so late in the forest's succession. The trees and soil are well established, but remnants of the volcanism are still prominent.

Meanwhile, the perplexed scissors slinked away quietly, not wanting to get involved.A tree which broke itself on a rock while also breaking the rock

What an obscure trail - 0.4 miles long, all the way out there. I had never heard of it.
I think it was maintained so well because they have been out there working on Trapper Creek and Siouxon for the fire damage, whose opening should be imminent now.

Looks like WTA did the trailwork. They will return on August 10th to finish it up.
"The last time WTA worked on this trail was 2006! One day in July wasn't enough to fix it up again. We return for two more days now to remove the remaining logs and reclaim the tread from many years of overgrowth."
