Step Creek Loop

Hiked the Step Creek Loop in Tillamook SF yesterday. It was a nice, short, hike. Only encountered 2-3 groups out there. Not far along the trail, I took a side trail down to the Nehalem river and found a pool that was full of baby trout or salmon. I tried to get a picture, but they were too small.

Not far before the trail splits off of the Gales Creek trail, I found what I think were pinning chanterelles. I was surprised, given how dry it's been. Unfortunately, these guys were right on the trail edge, and will probably get trampled at some point.

On the loop portion of the trail, I definitely heard something large crashing around in the woods, but never saw what it was. I'm assuming it was an elk.

Spittle bug:

FYI, the published distance for this trail on the field guide (7.4 mi) is wrong. I had my GPS going and got 5.4 miles total. Probably a little less, if you exclude my side trip to the river. I wonder if it was a typo? Or has the trail changed?

Thanks for the report! Your mileage is more accurate, so I'll change the FG entry.

Your mushrooms are probably baby boletes.
