Your mystery parasite is the little gnome plant, found here and there but about as frequently seen as a bear.

P.S. Why is it called the Alway Trail?
What I've heard about the trail is that is is named for George Alway, 1906-1993 who lived in Stevenson. There is a sign at Cold Springs Camp:
