Silver Star Mt Backpack

Post by Grazingllama » July 4th, 2021, 8:00 pm

In case you were wondering, a lot of people visit Silver Star over the July 4th weekend. Including an 89 year old grandpa with his descendants. We decided to do an overnight backpack, and camped in the campsite just off the summit, at the last turn before the final slog up the rocky road. We ended up sharing with two other parties, including two who were there to photograph the Milky Way. We started at Grouse Vista and circled back the next day on the Tarbell trail, which despite having to navigate newly clearcut areas, was still a relief to be on a dirt trail, rather than those infernal rocks. We saw a great sunset, with a gaggle of "young people" who showed up at 8:30 pm, and left at 9:30pm, including two on one-wheels. A great trip!

Looks like a beautiful trip. Is there water anywhere near the summit? --Rob

You mean one of these infernal things? I see these becoming an increasing problem on hiking trails. And how on earth did it navigate that incredibly rocky trail?

I'm not gonna lie, so was I... Maybe the Unipiper was traveling outside of Portland?

Yes, the first picture is correct. A nine year old knew the term, but it was new to me too. They negotiated the rocks very slowly!

Nobody answered the question about water at the summit

There is supposed to be a spring about 800 feet west of the summit

Take the summit trail down to the Silver Star trail

Go about 500 feet south to the Sturgeon Rock Trail

Go about 100 feet on the Sturgeon Rock Trail, then turn right on the unnamed trail

The spring is about in 100 feet

According to the Gaia map, and I've read about it

I don't know if it really exists though

Anyone ever go there?

There was a half-cut blue barrel to collect water a few years ago, the spring was running well in the middle of summer. I haven't visited it in a while though. It's blue diamond on this map, just off Sturgeon Rock trail.
