Mill Creek Wilderness 5/6/2021

Post by retired jerry » May 14th, 2021, 6:21 am

I spent a few days at Mill Creek Wilderness north of Prineville. Drove to upper Twin Pillars trailhead. Only a few spots of snow. Saw a few backpackers on the weekend. The campground there is really nice.

The last mile of road is awful. You could just park at the end of the paved road. There's sort of a trail that connects up with the official trail.

This is a perfect time to go - 5000 feet elevation, the snow melts off sooner here. It gets pretty hot later in the summer.

Didn't take many pictures. Bingham Prairie at upper Twin Pillars trailhead:

It was just covered with these tubes of gravel made by ground squirrels:

I think they make tunnels under the snow, then fill them with gravel they dig up. A place to put the spoils from tunneling. The tubes always appear when the snow first melts. That whole meadow was just covered.
