I usually just guess, knowing I have a 50-50 shot at getting it right.

You know exactly what to do.
There's no need to be afraid.
Keep walking.

Now if I could only remember the different names for white vs purple trilliums.

I've been up and down that trail post-fire. Yeah, it gets a bit indistinct in spots, but I encourage people to keep looking. It does get better, unless it's degraded since my last visit. There are some fun offtrail routes nearby too, so if you lose the trail, just keep going up, if that falls into your comfort zone.dmthomas49 wrote: ↑May 8th, 2021, 2:30 pmWould be nice if we could get some boots on the Casey Creek Trail to make that loop easier to find. Last time I tried it from Herman Creek, I lost the trail after about 100 yards and gave up.
You know since Chip is so hard on his hiking shoes, I bet he could make one pass of the trail and it would be hikable again.

Would it be best to try and follow the trail from the bottom up or top down?Chip Down wrote: ↑May 9th, 2021, 8:04 am

The easiest way to remember is that avalanches are fresh, white snow and glaciers are old and yellowed by the debris which falls down on them from the cliffs.
Just to complicate the issue - there are also fawn lilies that grow this time of year

Hmm...I don't recall a lot of tricky terrain in that area. If you lose the trail on a descent, you could almost certainly bushwhack safely down to Herman Creek Trail. I've explored quite a bit around there, and I think if you cliff out, there's always an easy workaround. Going up might pose more of a challenge, but it's more fun, more stuff to explore.dmthomas49 wrote: ↑May 9th, 2021, 1:43 pmWould it be best to try and follow the trail from the bottom up or top down?Chip Down wrote: ↑May 9th, 2021, 8:04 am

Glacier lilies represent yellow snow, because avalanches move too fast for you to pee on them.
