I think it's hopeless and counter productive to control fires in the wild
maybe use that to figure out where to do prescribed burns to prevent such large fires

How would you irrigate forests? McNeil in particular is at high altitude in a wilderness area where infrastructure is prohibited. The nearest significant water is many miles away and downhill.It seems to me, if you start tracking this pattern, organize the irrigation process to prevent fires.
It doesn't appear that the government can do anything this proactive. Forest Service backlog fuels wildfires.This will cost clearly less than putting out fires and reforestation.
