Marmots in MH Meadows

Post by Metacomet » July 9th, 2020, 6:23 pm

Went for an out-and-back from Timberline Lodge to Newton Creek yesterday and spotted 2 yellow-bellied marmots right off trail, about mid-way through the Mt Hood meadows! Been to this section of Timberline Trail loads of times and never seen or heard them!

Went past a couple hikers with unleashed dogs, which is usually fine but ive seen a number of times when puppers get quite ornery over the sight of a marmot. Id recommend anyone going on this trail to leash up when going thru the meadows.

Sorry for the low-res, phone is half a decade old.

Neat.
There aren't a lot of marmots on Hood. I saw one in the Meadows area once, and a couple near Barrett Spur.

I've just seen one above McNeil Point or Cairn Basin, and one below Eliot Glacier.

I've never seen one on Hood but I know someone who saw a marmot at Paradise Park.

I saw one trotting across snow while riding one of the ski lifts at Timberline this past season. Could hardly believe it! Took me a while to figure out what the heck it was.

At first, I was amazed that a marmot could trot across snow while simultaneously riding a ski lift. But then I realized you're obviously fibbing, as marmots aren't allowed on the lifts.
