Hiked the Fossil Trail Loop starting from the Kalama Horse Camp TH and going clockwise. There's an excellent description of this loop in the field guide Here . This loop connects some old abandoned logging roads, ski & hiking trails to make the full loop around Goat Mountain & Goat Marsh. This journey is primarily a forest hike, so not a bad choice on a cloudy or overcast day. However, the forest offers a lot of variety - old growth, second growth, Noble Fir, Douglas-fir, Silver Fir & then Lodgepole Pine. Finished off with stretch along the Kalama River.

As you say, a good hike on a cloudy day. And some of the world's most massive noble firs are lurking nearby!
