Grayback Mountain - 6-17-2020

Post by dmthomas49 » June 18th, 2020, 4:22 pm

There were no other cars at the trailhead when we arrived or when we left. We got started at the trailhead at 8am. It was cool in the 50s and sunny. We rode our mountain bike for about the first 3 miles of the road. The road was mostly dry and hard packed dirt.

There were lots of flowers blooming and the grasses and other plants made this a fun hike.

The top was reached and some mountain peaks were visible and others blocked by clouds.

This was the first time doing this hike. It is worth repeating even with the long drive.

Yup, a native hazelnut, Corylus cornuta. Probably.

Your "succulents" are Columbia desert parsley and mahala mat, both gone to seed.

I need you on my hikes for plant identification. :)

Your peaks to the right of Rainier looks like Mt. Stuart, west of Leavenworth near the Enchantments. Alpine Lakes Wilderness.

Stuart stands higher above its neighbors than that. I think it's Goat Rocks.

Yes, I don't think you can see all the way to Stuart from there. Those peaks are southeast of Rainier - Goat Rocks.

PSA: I tried to hike Grayback Mountain from the south this week and quickly ran into clearly signed POSTED NO TRESPASSING signs. Apparently it is now off limits. I found this confirmation afterward.
UPDATE: AS OF MARCH 2022 ACCESS TO GRAYBACK MOUNTAIN HAS BEEN CLOSED BY THE PRIVATE LANDOWNERS. PLEASE RESPECT THEIR DESCION.[sic]
