Oxbow park and Collins hot springs

Post by CyrusK. » May 5th, 2020, 3:38 pm

A few days ago I went for a short hike along the Sandy river in Oxbow park. I’d stumbled across a little mystery in the area that I wanted to investigate. While randomly looking at a geothermal map of Oregon (I was bored), I found a mention of a “Camp Collins hot spring” on the peninsula in Oxbow park. I managed to find some information on it from the Oregon department of geology website here: https://www.oregongeology.org/gtilo/ng ... MU-003.pdf.
I was able to find the gps coordinates for the site (45.503936N, -122.302747W). I then asked a friend of mine who worked at camp Collins about it, but she said she’d never heard of it. So I set out to investigate myself.

The river’s moving fast, notice the stream bank erosion?

This is where the springs should be (right where the creek meets the river).

Oh well, so sign of it. It might be on the other side of the mouth if the creek, but I didn’t have waders and didn’t feel like mucking across. Does anyone know anything about the Camp Collins hot springs? Did it go by way of Kennedy hot springs?

Interesting. Their map shows the hot spring in the middle of the river now. You wonder if maybe the Sandy rearranged itself and buried the hot springs or you have to wade out into the river to find it.
