Nice work Schrauf!

Cool to see others up in those high areas. Super cool going along at the base of N-C glacier. I’ll get my report up soon on my recent CCW Loop last week. It was pretty epic. Keep it up!

That IS surprising. Do you have a GPS track?

Here's an idea for a big loop: start on the Newton Creek Trail (from Hood River Meadows?), go up Newton Clark Moraine, traverse north below NC Glacier and then go down Gnarl Ridge.

That hiker that died in Mt Jefferson area was found in the alpine area above Jefferson Park. It will be interesting if they conclude anything about why he died. Be careful when going above the trail. (Talking to myself).

Yeah...talking to all of us. It feels "relatively" safe, but that can turn on a dime in those areas. I read in the paper this morning that they expect to determine his cause of death shortly.

Wow that's sad; And very strange as I was JUST On GE 3 nights ago looking at those season tarns in that dune like area above jeff park by the whitewater glacier area...someone years ago posted a fun looking TR of that area... Off trail = whole diff game. Keep safe everyone!

I'm actually not so surprised. I'm intimately familiar with the terrain between Cloud Cap and Meadows, and I've learned that when conditions are ideal, a hiker who is either very experienced or very lucky [Schrauf is apparently some combination] can pass through there with little difficulty. Obviously, any combination of bad weather/snow/ice/routefinding/rockfall/etc can turn it from fun to disaster.

I was following GoalTech's track, which was public at the time, but it sounds like he will share it with his trip report soon. I tracked his route pretty closely in the crux areas before I turned down the moraine. Here is my track:

I'm no expert off-trail but somewhat experienced. I've explored quite a few nooks and crannies on Hood including the Yocum to McNeil traverse a few times, looped Adams twice, Whittier, did the 80-mile version of the Wind River High Route last year that is partially off-trail and often above 12k, stuff like that. But definitely no rock or alpine climber.

By easy I should clarify compared to what I expected given similar areas on Hood. Probably not a good spot to be first time off-trail without a "guide".
