Lupine extravaganza on Mt Adams

Post by drm » August 9th, 2019, 3:26 pm

On a trip to the Divide Camp Trail area and around on Mt. Adams I was astounded by fields of lupine just about everywhere. There were lots of annoying flies, but not very many mosquitoes. At least flies can't bite through clothes.

I'm intrigued by the creek pics. I almost always find myself doing loop hikes, so rarely have an opportunity to experience the alleged diurnal creek swelling we always hear about.

Well, now you know it is not alleged. But this was during the recent heat wave, so the impact might be less in normal temps. But also it was only 2pm, presumably it would be higher yet at 4pm. And keep in mind that seasonal snowpack is long gone. This is all glacier melt.

And I kind of like, sometimes prefer, out-and-backs. I don't think you really know a trail (or route) unless you've seen it going both directions.

yeah, out and backs are fine

going the other direction is almost like a different trip. Going uphill rather than downhill, for example, is totally different.

and then if you do a loop, you might find a roadblock and have to turn around and retrace. If it's near the end of the loop and can add an unreasonable number of miles. I'll be tempted to go through a dangerous section just to avoid having to retrace steps

Hmmm.... I know I've been bitten by flies on the shoulder through my shirt.

Nice photos drm! I agree on the out and back, it’s always nice to see things going the opposite direction:)

Not to hijack your post but I was up on Killen Creek trail with my kids a few weeks ago and had similar lupine views. Both the lupine and paintbrush were amazing - especially just below the PCT (very dry above the PCT). We didn't make it quite to High Camp, and the mosquitos were so bad at our turnaround point that we almost ran down the mountain.

I hadn't been to the NW side of Adams for a while, but then was inspired by Darin's awesome trip report "Mt Adams Backpacking Loop" viewtopic.php?f=8&t=28324&view=unread#unread

That's why I love this site - lots of inspiration for future trips. Thanks for the reports and the pictures!
