Falls Creek Falls Hike 032419

Post by mjanardh » March 25th, 2019, 9:32 pm

Right off the bat 2-3 feet of snow from the road. The hike to the TH from the road was a relentless pot holey affair, missed snow shoes. Within the first 1/4 mile into the hike, I passed everyone I'd meet for the day and had the entire trail to me after that. I am pretty certain no one else besides me made it to the falls up until 4.00pm, less likely someone would have ventured out there after that. The solitude felt a bit creepy at times, and wondered if a pair of cougar eyes were watching me or a bear out of hibernation was behind me! Slowly but steadily reached the TH after a struggle, but from the TH to the falls, surprisingly less snow and more consolidated and made the hike more fun. The vigorously flowing creek was the only company all along and the full flowing falls was a sight to behold. In all ended up clocking in at ~9 miles. Footnote: Plenty of snow on the road to last thru April and early May, traction required, carry snow shoes and enjoy

So many times I've seen people flailing in the snow on that road. Snowshoes or XC skis are really needed for that flat 2.5 miles. And I've never had to take them on the trail, just stash them at the trailhead.

Well, that's disappointing about the walk in on the road. I'd gotten the impression from this post that there was a track compacted enough to walk in on without all the postholing.

Yes there is a track and for 2 reasons, its not effective, one being that if everyone followed the track it would get more compacted, but people have been walking all over and the the track is not easily visible. Secondly, with the warming up of weather, and under layers melting, there is post holing even in compacted areas.
