Mt. Margaret & Mt. Tomroy Sept. 18th, 2018

Post by Don Nelsen » September 19th, 2018, 4:18 pm

Winter is coming as was well evidenced by the fresh snow on Mt. St. Helens as we drove up the 25 road yesterday.

Lured on by the possibility of a huckleberry feast and enticed by some spectacular weather my son and I set out to see what the Mt. Margaret area looked like without smoke. In 12 hikes in the area so far this year, I had yet to have a really clear day so this was a rare treat indeed.

We saw less than a dozen other hikers scattered over our 11.4 mile route and must have each eaten a quart of berries along the way. The weather was perfect, low fifties, light wind and mostly sunny.

The forest is returning, making the area at least as beautiful as it was pre-eruption plus the visibility is great with the trees growing not nearly so close as they were before. Take a look:

Had the bull elk started their annual bugling contests?
