Cape Falcon to Short Sand Beach

Post by dgweston » May 28th, 2018, 5:10 pm

From 5/12/2018

The Oregon Coast is gorgeous. I hiked Cape Falcon to Short Sand Beach and back. 1/3 of the way back, I learned from a fellow hiker that I could have just hiked one direction and hopped on the shuttle that runs along highway 101 for the other direction. I would have gladly paid the $3 fare, but then again, there's something satisfying about getting so utterly wiped out. Boots and clothing covered in mud, and a little rain along the way. It sure was beautiful! When I return, I will start earlier on the trail, and take the shuttle. With side trails and all, it was 14.5 miles as an out and back.

Big old trees at the start:

Skunk cabbage! Lots of it.

Thanks to Facebook Plant ID group, I learned the photo below is of Vancouver groundcone. It parasitizes salal bushes (and others). There were enormous salal bushes all over the place, so I’m thinking they’re taking it all in stride.

The first clear view of the coast. This is Cape Falcon. There were a few earlier viewpoints, but was socked in with fog.

Been on my radar.
You got the perfect day.
And 14.5 miles ... pffft. P.O.C. :D
Thanks for the report.

What a wonderful trip report. Seems as tho the Gorge fire closure has us looking afield. Visited recently myself and:
