McKenzie River Trail

Post by markesc » October 4th, 2017, 12:14 am

Ended up at the McKenzie by the end of the day...

Started out @ the overlook of the east side of Hood:

Nice to see the Elliot with fresh snow! Don't remember seeing snowdome opened up like this:

Hit Trillium Lake, was windy/nothing special... so it was down the 42, color at every turn!!:

Eventually hit the 46 with this view of Mt. Jeff:

Stopped at the McKenzie wagon road:

Nice! So you drove to the McKenzie River via Road 42, then Road 46? I don't understand. That's near Eugene, right?

The road to Timothy Lake is the 42, which eventually puts drops into the 46, which puts you along the breittenbush then to Detroit. Then 22 South, to the 126...

The main idea is that it beats taking I-5 to the 22..

I though when you got to Breitenbush the road gets bad, gravel and worse

Nope its smooth sailing almost the entire way, there are a few potholes maybe the very last mile before you get to Detroit. If my car can make it, any can! (I'm on 19" wheels/low to the ground) Paved the entire way! Actually saw the Forest Service doing some bridge inspection on one of the old wooden bridges, nice to see 'em at work! Great route before the snow becomes a problem...

hmmm... I'll have to try that sometime. Thanks. The next time I go to Detroit, like once or twice a year.

You're probably thinking of the loop east of this route past Olallie Lake and back to FR-46. The part south of the lake is only for high clearance vehicles.

Nice fall photos! Which section of the McKenzie River Trail were you on? Near McKenzie Bridge? Tamolitch Falls? Clear Lake?

This was the section above Sahali falls, over the bridge, down n back. I only had about maybe 45 - 60 minutes of light left to work. So many stops along the way, you're constantly seeing "photos" all over the place along the drive, especially if you take the longer route from Mt. Hood along the forest roads.
