East Zigzag via Burnt Lake snow level report

Post by EThiker » June 6th, 2017, 6:00 pm

We went up to East Zigzag from North Burnt Lake TH this past Saturday. Practically snow free (a few tiny patches) up to the lake where we saw a lot of campers/hikers. Then snow pretty much all the way up to the top, deep in some places. Not more than 2-3 feet at the top though, I think.
The trail up to the lake was in good condition. The road to the trailhead was also fine.

No pictures to post... it was very cloudy :P

Was the trail from the lake to the top of East Zigzag easy to follow? Did you need any kind of special traction, like Yaktrax?

We only made it to the top using GPS topo map (Gaia). It would have been quite difficult to recognize the trail without it unless you know the trail very well. We wore microspikes (Kahtoolas) and they helped a lot. Yaktrax would probably be ok too... It wasn't icy when we we were there and the trail is not super steep, but spikeless boots would have made it much harder of a climb.
