On this work party we worked from the Fish Creek trailhead. On Monday, April 18th, two of us went with the ranger and another sawyer to clear ALL of the logs blocking the trail from Fish Creek to Pup Creek.
Yesterday we focused on a root ball that pulled away the trail, creating a treacherous passage for hikers. Three of us were able to clear the debris from the root crater, raise it several feet by filling with wood and rock debris, and create a new trail through the crater.
Clackamas River trail is now clear of significant debris and logs (until the next windstorm, most likely!). In this old burn area, it does not take much wind to topple trees. Any reports of downed trees or other issues are always welcome!
This is a picture of the debris in the root ball crater.
We pulled down rocks from the hillside to raise the tread surface for a new trail section.
This upper section shows the difficult path that hikers were taking to get around the crater.
It was getting late in the day for good pictures, but this shows the new trail. Hikers go down a bit of a slope to get into the root ball crater and climb up a bit to the existing trail.
