awesome, thanks I'll see what our school group is up for. If they think it is too daunting a task, I'll see about recruiting some more experienced backpackers to take it on. If that happens I'll post here for volunteers!

Ryan,

Hopefully a few in the crew will have enough energy at the end of the work day to continue on up to the summit. Be sure to let us know how it is!

Reviving a very old thread...

Did this work ever get done? Anyone have more recent beta on the condition of this trail? I'm interested in doing an overnight to Mt Mitchell via N Siouxon and wondering how that trail is and how close to the top I could camp. Anyone?

Best camping spot, I think, is at the junction with the spur to Black Hole Falls.

A couple of years ago, I did a long day hike that way to Mt Mitchell. There’s no bridge on the upper crossing with the sketchy rigging. It was late summer & low water. Walking across was no problem. Didn’t get my feet wet. Could have higher water now. I did not think the brush was that bad. They were logging right below Mt Mitchell. You have to follow the roads around thru the new clear-cut & find the Mt Mitchell trail near the end of a spur. Look at some satellite photos on caltopo or google earth. I agree with bobcat on the camping. Mt Mitchell is pretty cool. Have fun!

Thanks for the replies! I was hoping there would be a spot near the top to camp so I don't have to do a 15-ish mile day. I *might* be able to get up there to camp near Black Hole Falls after work on a Friday and make it a two-nighter, but I was hoping some of those trees I see up top on satellite would be suitable for a hammock.
