Highline Trail (Glacier NP) 6.18.15

Post by weathercrazy » July 5th, 2015, 6:53 pm

Wow...sorry for the lateness! Work has gotten into the way quite a bit haha.

Without looking it up, guess by the pics the total mileage/EG from this trail!

All pics from this second round at Glacier:

A few pics from the pre-hike:

Lots of goats on this trip to Glacier...

Image

Such a beautiful park, and such a contrast to the fall colors/grey skies and clouds I saw in September last year.

Image

This year:

Fall last year:

Image

If you don't know already, I love aspen trees, in fact, I have two in my yard.

Image

Blue Hour at Two Medicine:

Image

And sunrise at Two Medicine:

Image

More aspens!

Image

Moose in the road!

Image

I was there on Friday the 18th, the first day the road was open all the way through. The gate opened at 8 AM and I was there :)

Image

FINALLY:

Onto the trail. The trail was "closed" the day before, but opened the same day as the pass.

It starts at Logan Pass and heads north, mainly level, then actually loosing some elevation gain to start.

Image

The reason the trail was closed was this one section of snow near the TH that had a very steep slope. They blasted it out the day before.

Image

The views are sweeping, especially to the west and northwest.

Image

Waterfall on the trail:

Image

Looking back toward Logan Pass

Image

AMAZING VIEWS!

Image

Another look back toward Logan Pass, including the Going To Sun (GTS) road.

Image

This is the first look into the basin above the Weeping Wall

Image

It's also where I first saw these goats...

Image

Weeping Wall from above

Image

The two goats walking along the Highline Trail

Image

More great views! This looking NW.

Image

And this more westerly and SW.

Image

After photographing and watching the goats for some time, I finally caught up to them, and they were in no hurry to move.

Image

Image

Um, could I get by???

Image

Finally, as they were at this watering hole, I scooted by, trying not to disturb them. Several times I got "the look"

Image

Here's where the Glacier Lilies started.

They weren't as carpeting as the avalanche lilies at Vista Ridge, but they were much, much more widespread!

Image

Image

That yellow tinge is alllllllll glacier lilies

Image

Image

Absolutely incredible views! It was slowing my progress!

Image

Cool little cloud rolling over the mountains in the strong winds!

Image

Not a lot of snow to cross, but some, I'm sure of which is mainly gone now!

Image

After being in meadows, then rock, then meadows/scrub, then meadows, you finally break out into just rock again.

The water features are awesome here, they are very "visible", not hidden by our dense underbrush.

Image

Image

This is where I turned around. About 4 miles in, just after the high point of the trail at 7,300'. The trail from here descends 900' before gaining again to the Granite Park Chalet. The clouds were threatening and I didn't have a full day to hike.

Image

Looking west, the GTS road visible on the bottom.

Image

Well lookie here, they had walked the trail up the entire way!

Image

Image

This time, I stepped onto some rocks off the trail, and they walked by.

Image

Back to Glacier Lily land!

Image

Image

Image

I love the cloud shadows here!

Image

And very similar:

Image

Not long after arriving back at the TH, here comes a thunderstorm!

Image

And this newly "refreshed" Glacier. Everything dripping wet but the sun out.

Image

And down by the river, it was still raining, but alas the sun was out!

Image

All in all, a really well maintained trail.

Ok, you saw the views, so it must be some horrendous elevation gain and distance right????

Nope. 8 miles RT and only 1,100' in elevation gain! The trip to the Chalet doubles the distance and adds about 1,700' elevation gain to the trip.

Gorgeous pictures! You must have an amazing camera. I am looking for a new one, but need a small point and shoot.

That is one of my favorite trails in GNP. Although there are so many fantastic ones to choose from. I love staying at Granite Park chalet and then hiking down to Many Glaciers and doing more hiking out of there. Last time we continued on and hiked out of Many Glacier over Piegan Pass, Gunsight Pass, Lincoln Pass and down to stay at Sperry chalet a couple of nights in order to do a day hike up to Sperry Glacier. Then down to Lake Mc Donald. A great loop (well almost a loop). Needed to take the shuttle back up to the top of Logan Pass.

Glad you got such great weather and photos!

:D :D Absolutely gorgeous, brings back good memories. That's a pretty early opening for the GTTS road and the Highline Trail isn't it? When my wife and I hiked this trail, the goats blocked our way for a bit and there weren't a lot of places to go off-trail, it was a huge drop on one side and a sheer cliff going up on the other. Patience may be required for goat crossings!

Great pics, Tyler. Glacier is an impressive place, good job getting out there before it's gone. ;)

That one goat has a pretty serious radio collar on it - do you know what that's about? I've never seen that before, I guess the FS doesn't care about the goats around here...

Ya, they use that to track where the heards are traveling to see if there are any impacts from visitors, construction etc.

This was the only goat I saw with a collar.

Also in the park saw two black bear near Many Glacier, but other than that and the moose, no animals.

Stunning photos! Looks like you got the perfect timing too, still snow on high peaks for contrast with green valleys below. Thanks for bringing back memories.

Young goat on this picture is probably asking its mom: what are these hikers doing on our trail
