Boy Scout Ridge AGAIN 1/24 - 25

Post by rainrunner » January 26th, 2015, 7:00 am

We did our (all too frequent) favorite overnight hike to Boy Scout Ridge this past weekend and scoped out some new spots to camp.

The Timberline Trail is currently very steep with snow.

A beautiful night, not to cold with calm winds and lots of mountain climbers scaling Mt Hood.

We woke at 5am and enjoyed the start of a new day.

It was nice chatting with you on Saturday and Sunday. We went up the ridge from our camp both days and played in the snow here...

Some of the boys and myself had a crazy fast ride down that ravine with some polyethylene sheets I brought along for glissading.

Here is a shot of some of us with our cheap sleds at the bottom of the big hill...

The interesting thing for us on this trip was spotting a bear further up in the White River canyon (eastern part). My son also said he found tracks which were pretty big. I wonder what a bear would be finding to eat up there this time of year.

We also found a case of beer (pabst blue ribbon) sitting on top of the snow at our camp. Later in the day, the Oregon Hash House Harriers show up and said they had buried it under the snow last week. They brought another couple cases up with them. They said they were a drinking club with a running problem. I was a bit concerned they were going to get boisterous with the alcohol near our scouts, but they were well mannered.

When we were climbing the big hill, we were ready for a Scouts in Action (or failblog.org) moment as we watched and video'd a couple guys downing beers and then attempting a kamikaze ride down that big steep hill on long plastic sleds. The both wiped out, but fortunately missed the rocks.

raftindog: The TT was the only place we post holed and snowshoes wouldn't have worked because the trail is so narrow and steep with shrubs tripping us up. Clearly, no one had attempted to hike there in a very long time.

dirtman: It is always good to see our youth out spending time in nature. Thanks for the commitment of your adult leaders.

Zia and Splintercat: Thanks for the kind words about the photography.
