Oregon Hikers

Sleeping Beauty is a ridge, vaguely shaped as it is named from certain viewing directions. It was the home to a fire lookout once and is now home to one of the most impressive views of the west side of Mt Adams. It is also a short and remote hike. It is 1.5 miles one way and gains 1500 feet, and there are no other hiking trails anywhere near it.

So I don't get out there all that often. To make it more worth the time this trip, I took my backpacking cooking kit to have dinner up there.

The first mile of the hike is steep trail in the forest


After brief flatness on the shoulder, you go round back (the north side) and soon see signs of the summit rocks


The last couple hundred feet have some impressive trail construction

It was quite windy on top but the MAÎTRE D' ended up getting me a great seat

There were two other cars at the trailhead, and I saw them coming down soon after I started up. I was at the top from about 6pm - 7pm and nobody else was up there then.

Looks like you were given the best seat in the house.

I've wondered about sleeping beauty. Perhaps in this picture you can see the "beauty."

Dean knows how to to do things, the rest of us are bumbling idiots! No bad feelings, but drm just knows how to do fantastic hikes to places the rest of us do not even bother to visit!

It's nice to see a TR of this place. I loved doing this hike with my kids when they were younger. Not a major mile maker but my kids felt like they had just scaled Mt. Everest when they reached the top. Superb views too! Nice pictures DRM, thank you for sharing!

Dean, I hoped that you might know the story of the wee gravestone for a turtle that is installed atop Sleeping Beauty. It's a mystery to me, but I love getting up there and hanging out with the spirit of long-departed "Tuter the Turtle" for a bit.
