I went up Herman Creek for a few nights. I think this was about the best backpacking weather I've ever had - cold enough to kill bugs, not too cold to freeze water, no rain - I slept under stars every night, no dew or frost.
Too lazy to post many pictures - others have already done so.
I camped at Herman Camp and found spring where Eric said it was.
I tried to cross Herman Creek but log was too slippery.
I went most of way up Herman Cutoff - bits of snow but trail clear at 4000'.
I camped at Casey Creek and Fred and Thomas walked by:
I hike up to Nick Eaton Ridge. Bits of snow around but trail clear at 4000'.
I hiked down to Indian Point, and weirdly, at 2500' it turned into winter wonderland:
Weird how the higher the elevation, the warmer it got. Middle 30s up Herman Creek, but when I got down to Deadwood camp, it was 26 F at night - that was a bit cold. I left my Sawyer Squeeze filter in plastic bag on ground with stuff on top. In the morning I put it in my pocket. My water bags were covered but started freezing so I heated some of the water on stove and poured back into bags.
I met someone else backpacking, camped at Herman Camp - unusual in winter. A few day hikers out.

Congratulations on the Fred and Thomas sighting, they are legends! I think that they collect Jerry sightings!retired jerry wrote:I camped at Casey Creek and Fred and Thomas walked by:
Some people are really fit at eighty; thankfully I still have many years to get into shape…

I've seen Fred and Thomas several times. Thomas has distinctive beard.
