I went up to Herman Creek on Friday and there were mobs of furloughed hikers protesting below the closed Trail Head:
They were angry about this sign and asking the tough questions like, "why do they all say Bayner when the Germans call it B*ner?"
1.2 billion was spent to knock this tree over the trail to the keep people out:
Some vandals came by and sacked the blockade as best they could
From the other side:
Mushrooms on the way to the swamp:
A hollow log to end all hollow logs for chase:
And more storm cleanup near the east fork crossing:
The rock slide above Mud Lake had been taped off with yellow and orange ribbons($1.2 billion)
Tomlike was a great spot for lunch and there were the usual great views of St Helens and a bit of Woolly Horn:
Adams, Ranier and St Helens:
Couple of summit panos:
I loitered around the summit for a while and then dropped back down to the ribboned off rockslide:
Found these interesting rocks as well:
This house is empty after it was found the occupants didn't have a NWFP showing during the shutdown:

Love the trip report

I saw a rock like those up on Tomlike one time. It kind of had a carved out appearance. I figured it was some kind of old Indian artifact like some kind of tool or weapon.

Nice and hilarious TR and photos, Sean! I went up to Tomlike Oct. 5 from Wahtum Lake with Mrs. Woodpecker for a shorter stroll. Her first time up there and loved it. One of my favorite Hatfield Wilderness summits. There was still some snow on the Anthill Trail as well as some edible fungi. Thanks for clearing what trail you could. Did the same until the Tomlike junction but had far less big stuff to clear.
Here's some photos from then:

Sean,
You JUST HAD to get all political on us, didn't you?!
Thanks for the great trail work. Someday, we're gonna get up there.

Hilarious TR, Sean! Good thing those vandals didn't steal any of those critical closure signs!
Re: Freedom Hiking on Tomlike Mtn: 10/4/13
Nice Sean, glad you managed to get by the mob and grab a couple of pictures to share. Don't worry about reporting the vandalism... I'm on it and have made several calls. Sadly, all of the tip lines are down due to the lapse in federal government funding.
Re: Freedom Hiking on Tomlike Mtn: 10/4/13
Thank you for cleaning up the trail. Are we to assume that the blowdown somehow occured after the USFS laid off its non essential employees? Maybe the best thing to do is keep them laid off and have you and your vandals remove all of the trail debris?
