Serene Lake on the Mt Hood NF was our destination for the 4th of July.
We started from the Shellrock Lake Trailhead which is just above the Hideaway Lake Campground. Access was via 5 miles of gravel road 5830 (includes potholes), after turning off paved road 58. A cool breeze kept the mosquitoes down for us but we did encounter a few. Lots of Rhodies and Bear Grass in full bloom, including on the road in. Total round trip was about 10 miles which included two lake viewing side trips. Could have made the longer loop around the lake basin, but the up and down hiking made this enough for our first trip here. Will save the loop for another trip.

Beautiful holiday 4th.

Whoa, that's a chore to carry a canoe in there.
How were the crowds?

Only met 7 people & 2 dogs on the trail. A couple of tents at Shellrock Lake. Not very busy here.
Yes, I wonder what the story is on the waterlogged canoe. It's tied up and a paddle lies nearby on the shore. Not sure if it is need of repairs. It would need to be bailed out first!
Forgot to mention - the fish were really jumping at Serene Lake. Sometimes nearly a foot completely out of the water! Or so it appeared. Fun to watch them jump.

That is a serene 4th! Lovely photos. I too wonder how the canoe got there. Presumably the canoe is in Shellrock Lake? If the canoe remains there, one could bail it and go for a paddle. Gene ("pdxgene") would bring vanilla ice-cream and homegrown raspberries to go with the view from the boat!
Some people are really fit at eighty; thankfully I still have many years to get into shape…

So that is about 2.5 miles from the closest trail head according to my GPS track! That is some serious carrying! Was there only one paddle stashed there?
