Cape Horn - turnpike and reroute

Post by Ryan Ojerio » December 4th, 2012, 2:11 pm

Thanks to the volunteers from the Washington Trails Association and Cape Horn Conservancy (CHC) that finished up the turnpike and reroute on the first 1/4 mile of the Cape Horn Trail!

A special thanks to the many donors who contributed money to the CHC who then bought all the materials for the project.

Thursday was wet, windy and a bit cold, but they got to work scraping off all the organic debris and mud.

Then its time to pin down the logs and lay out the geotextile.

Here comes the gravel in a motorized Wheel Barrow - Thank you Chinook Trail Association for loaning the two toters!!

A little elbow grease gets the job done.

Now cover over with gravel, restore the organics to the trampled dirt and transplant some ferns to make it look nice.

Meanwhile, that muddy switchback needs work too.

Working smart, working safe, great tool storage guys and teamwork in lifting big rocks!

And the last project of the weekend, a short reroute that moved the trail out of a steep rut and over to a nice rock garden. The finished rock steps blend in really nicely. Great job volunteers!

I'd like to second that note of thanks to the volunteers and contributors. We hiked Cape Horn weekend before last, and the new work looked great!

Great job folks! That tread looks great. I can only imagine all the sweat it took to make it look that good

Thanks for all who worked on the turnpike. That section in the beginning of the trail was super-muddy long after the rain!
