Lakes Lookout (Elkhorns)07/18/12

Post by Guy » July 25th, 2012, 6:54 pm

Day three at Anthony Lake and we only had half a day for a hike today as in the afternoon we had to pack up & head South to meet friends at a cabin South of Sumpter & Philips Resevoir. Since we hadn't been able to tag it on our day one 3 peaks scramble we decided to go the easy way up to Lakes Lookout, the only peak we would climb on this trip with a trail all the way to the top!

Using the Hoffer Lakes trail again it was only 3 miles up to the summit of Lakes Lookout, we made a short detour to check out Lilypad Lake on the way.

The Hoffer Lakes trail joins the Anthony Lake Ski Resort road about half way up the ridgeline, you then have to hike about a mile on the road before reaching the junction for the final mile long trail to the Summit. There used to be a fire lookout on top & the trail is well constructed.

From the Summit there were the usual great views that we had become accustomed to on this trip! Here looking across to Lees Peak & the traverse we didn't want to try a couple of days ago from the Lees Peak side. From this side it looks less intimidating & the route down from the Lookout to the Lees Saddle was certainly possible.

After a quick bite to eat we were on our way back to the campground in order to pack up & be out by 12:00.

In summary the Lakes Lookout trail is an easy 3 mile trail to a great lookout point well worth the effort!

By 11:00 we were back at the campsite & on the road by 12:00. We made a quick stop at Granite for Elk Burgers at the only place a town!

Then it was on to Sumpter for a look at the old Gold Dredge & a $5.00 public shower before heading off to meet our friends south of Black Mountain and the Philips Reservoir.

Nice report, Guy! The trail shows up as an old road on the too map -- is that the case?

Thanks Tom,

Yes a think it was a road at one time but a long time ago, it know longer looks like a road but a trail. Several of the other trails around the lake show up as roads too (the Hoffer Lakes Trail) but they must have been decommissioned a long time ago as they no longer resemble roads at all.

Here is a photo of a photo of the old 1915 fire lookout that used to be up there.
