Spent a beautiful Saturday up on Dog Mountain clearing the last of the winter blowdown from the Scenic Trail there. Few things are as fun, and satisfying, as tossing logs around while every person who goes by says thank you.
Bloom still hasn't really gotten going, although I spotted my first orchids of the season on the lowers slopes. And the upper loop around the back side still has plenty of snow, but if you're looking for a good leg-stretcher without any snow, the front-side trails up Dog are open for business.
Want to join the trail-clearing fun but don't have any tools or know-how? No problem. They supply all of both that you could need:

One of many such blowdowns across the trail. Considering how crazy the wind is on a normal day up there, I cannot imagine the windstorm that was responsible for all this.
See you all on the trail...

Thank you for all of your hard work. The trail was definatley the recipient of a lot of downed trees and branches.

Was up and down Dog on early Sunday morning and commented elsewhere here on the great work done on opening up the east-side (scenic) trail by the Washington Trail Assoc - WTA. HUGE amount of work - just take in the devastation off the (now beautiful) trail as you go up or down to understand a little how much work they did. Thanks

To all who worked on the Dog Mt. trail: Thanks for your efforts in cleaning that mess up! I hiked it after about half the work was done so can appreciate your effort.
I wonder about the potential fire hazard with so many branches and trees down over such a wide area. I sure hope our fire season is short and unevenful!

I hope that too. Most of the trees and limbs that came down have already dried out considerably in the time they've been down... Although I'm not especially burly, I had no problems hauling and even tossing leg-sized limbs that were 10 - 15 feet long.Don Nelsen wrote:I wonder about the potential fire hazard with so many branches and trees down over such a wide area. is what a lot of the east side of the mountain looks like now.

Thank you all ! I was there before the cleanup and cannot imagine how you cleared the whole thing. It was a huge mess ! Wow
Filling my bucket, one hike at a time.
