Silver Star Loop 15-Apr-2012
Re: Silver Star Loop 15-APR-2012
Nice TR! I tried to drive up their on the 12th but the snow on the road about 1 mile from Grouse Vista was to deep for a chevy aveo. So instead I headed over to Tum Tum, but I am glad to see someone else was able to get up to the parking area.

Thanks! Walkable early in the morning but posthole hell once the day warms up. There were a lot of tracks up to Pyramid Rock but few beyond that.Roy wrote:hows the snow up there is it post hole hell or staring to firm up? i am looking for hikes with some eg that is a favorite of mine.
nice tr as usual - Troy

Trapper Creek is federal - NW forest pass. On Silver Star, parking next to the gravel pile at 1600' doesn't require a DP pass - another reason I like to start there rather than Grouse Vista.Eric Peterson wrote:Very cool VM! Glad your back to hiking health from your airline sick time too
Almost time for me to buy a DP as well since they passed that recent leg. that allows
the danged thing to transfer between vehicles, then I will hit those DP areas more heavily!
Speaking of which, is the Trapper Creek area in DP land?

Don - good running into you again & meeting Guy for the first time. As I said, you were headed for an "...epic, herculean adventure..." Am eagarly awaiting the TR.Don Nelsen wrote:VanMarmot - good to see you again and I really enjoyed the conversation on top of Silver Star! Great report and pics, too. Quite the coincidence we ended up exactly in your tracks especially since we were basically off-trail at the time. We ended up with almost the same distance and EG for the day, too. Guy and I did about 9.6 and about 3,100' vertical for the day.
Guy's in charge of our TR for this one - he takes better pics, anyway and I have a brutal work week lined up. When he posts, I'll add a few pics.

Take snowshoes...jeffstatt wrote:Fun! Thanks for the report! I was wondering just how much snow was left up there (especially at the South side trailhead) I think I'll drag my 13-year-old up there this weekend!

Thanks for the photo, Guy. I try hard to keep my hikes from ending like the Titanic...Guy wrote:Good meeting you on the trail today Bruce.
Here is a photo of you making the History books! The first person to reach the Summit of Silver Star on the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking!
Don & I were fairly beat up by the time we got back to the car after the rest of our adventures! I'll report in a day or two..

Just for the record, you can't drive to the Grouse vista TH yet. We got to within about 200 yards, though, from the east side out of Washougal. From what we could see, the west side approach was worse so a longer road walk would be needed. dn

Hi There,
We were hiking Silver Star 4/15/12.. loved seeing your description and pictures. Hard to believe there were others out there as it was so quiet. We recently joined this site, and have not been able to post any of our pictures.. wondered if you have some tips.. and also any suggestions on other good hikes in this area. My wife and daughter are beginners so we are sticking to easy or moderate hikes for now. Thanks.

We were hiking Silver Star 4/15/12..Came up Tarbell Trail. Was a steady incline. Definitely do-able, but challenging for wife and daughter. Snow still covered sections of the trail. Views were spectacular. Made it 3/4 of the way up, but were stopped by deep snow, and turned back. Great day hike and the views were really great. Will be back to do this one again when the snow has had a chance to clear a bit. Saw several deer, and it was very quiet and peaceful. Would recommend this hike.

You can post your pictures as files - which is a good way to start. Go to "file name", then browse to your picture files (which may have to be made smaller), add the file. Then you can put that file into the text block as you write your TR. This may take some experimenting. A better way is via a service like Picassa or SmugMug - then you just paste the URL for your picture into the TR.blaze0222 wrote:Hi There,

Check-out the "Field Guide" tab on this site for some other hike ideas. I'd suggest Catherine Ck as a good easy/moderate hike with (soon) lots of flowers.
