Re: Snow Conditions on Table Mt. 2-15-2012

We did head up Table on Saturday, 2/18 and, while the weather wasn't that great, we did have a good trip up. Headed up Heartbreak Ridge (East Ridge) and over to the talus field and up through it to the summit and then down the west ridge to the PCT. Conditions - well, yes, there was snow. dusting started at PCT and got more intense about at the lower saddle but still very doable. The talus field had enough snow we could kick steps up and it was actually faster to ascent than without snow. At the top, there were winds and gusts and whiteout so we didn't go over for the views but headed west into the woods, some drifting there and some postholing getting over to the west ridge but the west ridge was very easy to descend - again easier than without snow and maybe 6-8" in places. All in all a true winter experience. We didn't use our microspikes on the whole trip but there is enough snow there that if it gets real cold, expect to need these for safety.
In the meantime, the whole route is fine, no obstructions and blowdowns and it looks like an early year to access this wonderful conditioning hike with great Gorge views.
