My favorite hike is always the one I've been looking forward to for a while, the one where I feel better afterward and saw lots and lots of animals I've never seen before. If I didn't have to drive there and got to stay to see the sunset, that's extra points.

Oregon and Washington are hiker's paradises. All you have to do is pick up a copy of William Sullivan's 100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon & SW Washington and start sampling the fare.

Sadly, one of my long term favorites shut down a couple of years ago. :( Every year I used to hike the MacIntyre Ridge trail at least once, if not more, but the BLM closed the main access road to the trailhead and now I must make do with several dozen other local day hikes. Poor ptitful me.

One nice one is Multnomah Falls to Larch Mountain. Another lovely one starts at the Wildwood Recreation Area near Welches and climbs Boulder Ridge to Huckleberry Mtn. but you have to pay an extra fee to park, as the BLM no longer honors the NW Forest Pass. Burnt Lake trail, continuing up to the top of East Zigzag Mt. is another oldie but goodie for me.

Oh, how to choose! The best autumn hike I've done is Tamanawas Falls on the east side of Mt. Hood.

And in the summer the wildflower displays on Silver Star Mountain are pretty spectacular!

It's far from local, and a whole day's drive away, but if you can get over to the Wallowas there's some amazing hiking over there!

Re Aimless' post above: it's still reasonably easy to get to McIntyre Ridge, but you need to go up Firwood Road by Shorty's Corner on Rt. 26 and work your way up to the Douglas Trail head.

It's hard to come up with a favorite. Maybe McNeil Point.
