Just a quick bit of info for anyone headed to Cairn Basin/Elk Cove from the Vista Ridge Trail. Last Saturday (8.9.08) patches of snow started about 2.3 miles up the Vista Ridge Trail. The attached picture is looking south where the Vista Ridge Trail intersects the trail to Eden Park and Elk Cove. There was still lots of snow on the trail towards Elk Cove. The trail to Eden park wasn't too bad though there were a couple places in the open areas where the trail heads down hill that if you're unfamiliar with the trail you might not figure out where you're suppose to go if you're one of those follow the trail types. By the way if anybody reading this was the person who left the note in the permit box at the trail head about the trail conditions thanks for the FYI!

As for me this weekend it's going to be Lookout Mountain.

Don't forget about the many group options: http://www.portlandhikers.org/forum/vie ... 3224#p3224

or the Trail Tending opportunities coming up also:

I may be able to do a short bike ride on Sunday. But the rest of the w/e I'll probably be hanging around the house with a beer in hand and a bag of ice on my knee.

I'm heading to Yellowstone for 2 weeks of camping/hiking/ backpacking (short trip) and photography. Going with a friend who also likes photography.
