I just won the "forgot something stupid" olympics

Post by Chip Down » December 24th, 2023, 4:30 pm

Stupid things I've forgotten:
Water (had a couple ice bottles in my cooler, and although they were old nasty freezer water, I got by).
Poles for tent vestibule, on a long cold windy night high on Hood in April.
Socks (had to wear my streetwear cotton socks).
Gaiters (Plan B was a lower shorter hike).

But yesterday I set a whole new standard. Forgot my...drumroll...pack!
There's no recovering from that one, had to turn back.

I can't fathom why this happened.
Yes, I'm scatterbrained, but this was way beyond even my standards. :|

Dumbest thing you've forgotten?

The night before climbing Mt. Whitney, I went to set up camp at Whitney Portal and discovered that I had a tent but no tent poles... because I had forgotten to pack them up at another campground 6 weeks earlier. (Since then, I've gotten a car that I can sleep in, so tent poles are no longer needed.)

But congrats, forgetting your backpack is far dumber. :) I can see how it might happen, though: a lot of my gear lives in my car, so I don't even think about boots, gaiters, trekking poles, bug spray, or sunscreen when leaving the house. I can imagine my brain thinking the pack might be in there too.

My buddy and I go through a verbal checklist when we carpool: "SKISBOOTSPOLES." Etc.

But there's a reason I own two helmet and two goggles, etc.

The worst was going out of town for multi-day ski traverse and forgetting a prescription medication.
Believe it or not, I barely ever ride a mountain bike.

I'll pull the car over when not to far from home and double triple check for items that I'm paranoid I've left at the house.

Got half way up Kings Mt once and realized I left me wallet in plain view on the car seat, that was a fun heart pounding race back to the TH

Kings Mountain trailhead is notorious for car break-ins
