Metolius: source to Lake Billy Chinook

Post by bunnyslayer » April 17th, 2022, 9:31 am

Planning ahead to find a 3-day trip I can do over Memorial Day. I've always thought it would be cool to hike the full length of the Metolius River, from the source to Monty CG on Lake Billy Chinook.

What I don't know is the condition of the trails/old roads/etc. going around the north end of Green Ridge, downstream from Lower Bridge CG.

Anyone have beta on this? Haven't been able to find anything recent online.

It's 16 miles total from Bridge 99 to Monty Campground. Locked gate at both ends. Most of the route there's a gravel road that I've occasionally seen a car on. There are several cabins whose residents are allowed to drive on the road.

There's another gate a couple miles beyond Monty but it's not been closed the last couple years. A few years ago they closed it for the winter.

I was at Monty a few months ago. That's a pretty nice place for a car camp if you're into that. Few people.

Some friends incorporated that section into a longer bikepacking loop a couple weeks ago. They said some parts before LBC were a bit annoying on bikes, but would be no problem on foot. That was before the recent snow, so I don't know if that storm caused any damage, downed trees, etc. I say go for it!
