Gold that is panned is seldom pure gold.

The price of gold is just as volatile as the dollar, if not more so. It swings wildly depending on economic forecasts by many individuals - and nobody does good economic forecasts. Aside from jewelry, gold is mostly useless - just like the paper money is printed on.
Of course, if you can get it with only your own labor - and your time is free and available, that's still a good deal. That's very different from taking your dollars and buying gold. Some people get very rich, some decidedly do not.

I take it you must not use a computer (or cell phone, tablet, laptop, widescreen TV.....)Aside from jewelry, gold is mostly useless - just like the paper money is printed on.
Computer equipment is FULL of gold and gold alloys.

In ancient times gold made a lot of sense to use as 'money' largely because it was so useless. That way all the more useful stuff, like goats or bronze, could be freed up for use in the real economy.

I did a search on "how much gold in my computer" and it said a fifth of a gram - half that for a laptop. Not exactly full.
