Stove type in August?

Post by hikerduane » April 7th, 2022, 10:51 am

Good morning, new member here, looking for info now and then for Oregon. I have a couple BP trips planned for Oregon in August, Eagle Cap out of Lostine again and due to ability to snag a permit for Three Sisters Loop a week later than I wanted and a longer hike in from a TH, did get one Tuesday evening. Due to so many wildfires out west here(Dixie Fire was 1.5 miles from me), wondering about use of stoves. For longer trips I use my TD 12-10 alcohol stove. I could use a isobutane stove if fire conditions require a stove that can be shut off. Is my Trail Designs Caldera Cone setup ok?
Also, how are the trails in the Three Sisters Loop compared to the Sierra granite for dogs? I plan on getting Repo some booties. He has only been on a 4 night bp trip so far with me, I'm retired, so longer hikes are a little tougher. Thank you from rural N.Calif.

booties good. There are places with obsidian that's sharp on dog feet

Yeah, bring isobutane stove just in case. caldera cone doesn't have a shutoff. But there probably won't be any restrictions.

you know about the permits required in Three Sisters? The Forest Service has gone nuts with severe restrictions on the number of allowed people. I think you have to get a permit 2 weeks ahead of time. They release them at some time like 7AM. You have to jump right then because they're all gone in a few minutes (or seconds).

Welcome Duane. I have used a Caldera Cone in Eagle Cap with no problem (there are no stove restrictions that I know of). The rock in the Sisters is volcanic and sharp, so I would definitely recommend booties for your dog. :)

I agree that bringing your isobutane stove with you as a backup option is a good idea, but you should be able to check on fire restrictions in Eagle Cap or Three Sisters via the websites for Wallowa-Whitman and Deschutes National Forests right before your hikes. Historically, Eagle Cap tends not to impose stove restrictions in the backcountry, but the world is changing every year and I'd hate to be caught with no viable stove option. The canisters are easily purchased in the town of Enterprise, but there's an old general store in Lostine that should still be open and they would stock them, too. Three Sisters might easily have stove restrictions imposed this August.

Thank you. My heel isn't improving, supposed to see a specialist in 10 days. I could at least do a few nights on the Loop. Will have to see. You can print out a permit you reserved, but only two weeks in advance of a trip. I agree, the FS sure makes the situation harder to manage, I plan on leaving for my trip exactly two weeks before my entry date.
My neighborhood was evacuated for a couple weeks while the Dixie Fire was going, I elected to stay home.
