Yocum Ridge 6/11. First patches of snow start ~5300', with significant coverage on the trail above that. Many of the open areas are already melted out, including the viewpoint at 6000' and some of the campsites up around the north side of the ridge ~6300'

East Crater Trail to Junction Lake in Indian Heaven - still lots of snow. It's off and on patchy at the start and the last mile is full coverage with no trail visible, XC navigation required. The lake itself is mostly melted out, but the surrounding terrain has 90% coverage, with the one campsite on the NW end melted out.

Zigzag June 24 2023

Post by retired jerry » June 27th, 2023, 5:54 am

I walked around Zigzag June 24 - up Cast Creek Trail, down Horseshoe Ridge Trail, Burnt Lake Trail down to south side, West Zigzag trail - little snow

Zigzag trail between Zigzag Mountain and Cast Lake had a difficult spot to cross because of snow

Zigzag trail up to Paradise Park started having big drifts of snow 5 feet high that I kept having to climb over so I turned around, close to the high point, about half way to the Paradise Park Trail

This was disappointing. 3250', west end of gorge, WA side.

edit: I should note that Silver Star appears bare from a distance, although I have no doubt there are little pockets here and there, near the top.

I've seen a few trip reports on the Oregon side of the gorge, but has anyone been out on the Washington side lately? I imagine Hamilton is probably still pretty socked in, but what about around Coyote Wall/Catherine Creek? Last visible snow on a few of the webcams via Tripcheck finally disappeared in the past couple days. I know it's still been pretty cold -- gorge didn't get this nice little mini heat wave we've had in the valley. Thanks

Yeah, I was up at Coyote Wall today for a quick loop on Little Maui and Old Ranch Road. Only went up to about 800ft and there was no snow. Probably just the top 10 or 20% of the CW/CC trail network has snow at this point. If you go to CW, expect wet feet (some of the trails turn into creeks when it's wet) and lots of mountain bikers. Though once it gets back to below freezing at night+above freezing in the day, any foot or bike traffic will be bad for the trail due to the freeze/thaw mud.

Went up Nick Eaton to the junction with the Ridge Cutoff trail, just below Peak 3152. Snow was as deep as 1.5-2' towards the top, depending on drifts. Snow condition was great, fairly fresh. Not a dry powder, but no crunchy layer on top and not too slushy.

If you are hoping to hike around Trapper Creek this warm weekend, it's a no go. 100% snow coverage a foot deep at Gov Mineral Springs area. Will be well into April before it is hikeable.
